No Hurry!
After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days. John 2:12
Dear fellow travelers on the Way,
“You must ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life” These words from Dallas Willard to John Ortberg captivated me from the first moment I laid eyes on them. So much so that they hang next to the mirror I see myself in each morning. It is challenging concept and an even more difficult task.
Even a cursory review of the life of Christ in the Gospels gives me a clue that Dallas didn’t come up with this on his own – another meme worthy statement.
Living out the great mission that the Father had given him never forced Jesus to hurry.
This simple verse in the Gospel of John reflects the pace and rhythm that our Savior followed all the way to the cross. No “on to the next thing!” attitude. No hurry. I wonder if He knew that his family and disciples needed some time to unpack the wonder of what they had just witnessed at the wedding in Cana.
Thank you for believing that hurry is a great enemy of our souls and being willing, like me, to at least try to set a more human pace as you fulfil God’s call. In a culture that values the immediate and the fast, keeping the life of Jesus before me as our counter-cultural model is both vital and life-giving. It allows me to take time to wonder, to be present in the moment, and help those I lead resist the pull to hurry we all feel.
Thank you for embodying this grace.
